What a quote is made of
We quote every trip per party, after you send dates and hotel level. This page shows the lines that make up a quote, the third-party prices we pass through at cost, and the shortcuts that make other quotes cheaper.
Why every price on this site says On request
A private active trip has a few large costs that do not change with the number of riders: the support van and driver, the guide, the day boat. Split between two people they are a large share of the price; split between eight they are small. A single per-person price would be wrong for almost everyone who reads it.
So we ask for dates, party size and hotel level, and reply with a quote for your trip. Each quote shows the lines below separately, so you can see what you are paying for and compare it with another quote line by line.
The lines in a quote
| Cost line | What drives it | Shared by the party? |
|---|---|---|
| Support van and driver | Number of riding days; distance between overnight stops | Yes |
| Guide | Number of days; a second guide for parties above eight on riding days | Yes |
| Bikes and helmets | Number of riders and riding days; e-bikes cost more | No, per rider |
| Boats and kayaks | Day boat hire at Lan Ha Bay; kayaks per paddler | Boat yes, kayaks no |
| Hotels | Hotel level and room sharing | No, per room |
| Meals | Meals listed in the itinerary | No, per person |
| Third-party tickets and transport | Published prices: caves, Angkor, speedboat, ferries, train, flights | No, per person |
Third-party lines are passed through at the published price on the day we confirm. Where they are known, we show them on the tour pages too.

What moves the price, largest first
- Party size. The van, guide and boats are shared. Two riders pay the most per person; six to eight pay much less.
- Number of riding days. Every riding day carries a van and driver. A tour with more days on the bike costs more than one with the same length and more transfers.
- Hotel level. We quote two levels on every tour. The gap is widest in Hanoi, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and narrowest on the Bolaven Plateau and Don Det, where choice is limited.
- Season. Hotel rates rise around Tet and in the busiest dry-season weeks at Angkor. Boat and van costs change less.
- Solo travel. A solo rider carries the whole van and guide cost. We will say if a short tour makes poor sense for one person.
- Extras. E-bikes, Grade 4 rides that need an extra van run, the 7 km Paradise Cave route, extra nights.
What is not in a quote, and why
- Travel insurance. We do not sell it. It has to name cycling, kayaking, caving and pillion motorbike riding, and only you can check that against your own policy and medical history.
- International flights. Prices and routes change daily and you can usually book them better yourself.
- Visas. They depend on your passport. We tell you where each tour crosses a border and what that crossing accepts.
- Most dinners. After a riding day most people want to choose where and when to eat. Where a dinner is included, the itinerary says so.
- Tips. Your choice, and we would rather not hide them in the price.
How a cheaper quote is usually made
If you compare our quote with one that is clearly lower for the same route, check for these. None is dishonest in itself; each changes the trip.
- No van on riding days. A guide on a bike and a meeting point at lunch is cheaper and leaves you with nowhere to go if you are tired or injured.
- Bikes hired on the day from a rental shop, without fitting or a spare.
- No weather day. The trip is shorter on paper and loses the activity if a boat or cave is closed.
- A shared kayak trip from a large day boat, instead of a private boat that can choose its lagoon by the tide.
- Hotels described by star rating rather than by name, so the hotel can change after you pay.
- A grade that is not stated, or stated as one word with no numbers behind it.
Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Why is your quote higher than others for a similar route?
Usually because of the support van on every riding day, the private boat on kayak days and the weather day. Ask the other company whether those are included. If they are and the price is still lower, that quote may well be the right choice for you.
Do you publish a price from per person?
No. A from price would be the price for the largest party at the lowest hotel level, which is not the price most people pay. We quote the trip you ask for.
Is the quote in US dollars?
Yes. Third-party items priced in dong or kip are converted at the rate on the day of the quote and shown with their original price.
When do I pay?
Only after you accept a written quote and itinerary. The deposit and balance terms are on the booking terms and payment pages, which are linked at the foot of every page.
