Who this trip suits
Phong Nha-Ke Bang is a limestone massif on the Vietnam–Laos border with more than 220 km of documented caves and underground rivers. In 2025 UNESCO extended the World Heritage property across the border to Laos's Hin Nam No. This trip uses the caves that are open to visitors without an expedition: Phong Nha Cave by boat, Paradise Cave on its wooden walkway, and a wet, muddy visit to Dark Cave.
The riding is what makes it Grade 3. The Ho Chi Minh Road west of Phong Nha climbs and descends through forest and karst with few flat sections, and on the hardest day you walk the Paradise Cave steps after the ride. If you are comfortable riding 50 km with sustained hills at home, you will manage. If not, ride the first and last climbs and let the van carry you through the middle.
One thing this trip does not include: Son Doong. That cave is visited only on multi-day expeditions run by a specialist licensed operator, and we do not sell or resell places on them.

Day by day
Day 1
Dong Hoi to Phong Nha, the river cave
Pick-up at Dong Hoi airport, about 6 km from the city centre, or at the railway station after the overnight train from Hanoi. The drive to Phong Nha takes 35 to 45 minutes. Riders who arrive early can cycle it instead, about 40 km on mostly flat country roads.
In the afternoon a river boat takes us up the Son River into Phong Nha Cave, about 1.5 km inside. The last boat leaves at 16:30, so on late arrivals we move this visit to day 3 and keep the evening for a bike fitting.
Day 2
The Ho Chi Minh Road to Paradise Cave
The first view down into Paradise Cave from the head of the wooden stairs
Start at 06:30. We ride the Ho Chi Minh Road south-west through the karst to Paradise Cave, about 55 km with roughly 600 m of climbing over the day, mostly in climbs of 50 to 150 m. The van follows the whole way and carries lunch.
Paradise Cave is 31.4 km long; visitors walk the first kilometre on a wooden walkway. Getting there is part of the effort: a 570 m sloping path to the entrance, about 300 wooden steps down to the cave floor and 524 stone steps on the way out. The van brings everyone back to Phong Nha.

Day 3
Dark Cave, the Chay River and Bong Lai valley
A shorter, wetter day. Dark Cave is the park's mud-and-water visit: expect to swim, wade and come out filthy, so wear swimwear and old shoes. Before or after it we paddle the Chay River for about 90 minutes on open sit-on kayaks.
In the late afternoon there is an easy ride of about 25 km through the farm lanes of the Bong Lai valley. This is also the weather reserve: if rain closed Paradise Cave on day 2, this is the day it moves to.
Day 4
The western Ho Chi Minh Road by motorbike, with a driver
The forest section of the western road, where traffic thins to almost nothing
Today you ride on the back. Each guest has a local rider and a helmet; Vietnamese law requires helmets for riders and passengers. The loop follows the western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Road deep into the forest towards the Laos border, about 130 km with stops at viewpoints and at a forest stream where we walk for 20 minutes.
This is the day with the least effort and the most hours out. Expect about four hours of actual riding time and a long lunch. If you have never been a pillion passenger, the first ten minutes are on a quiet road so you can get used to leaning with the rider.

Day 5
Morning ride, back to Dong Hoi
A last ride of about 20 km on the flat lanes south of Phong Nha, finishing at the hotel by 09:30. After a shower and lunch we drive to Dong Hoi for an afternoon flight or train.
If any part of days 2 to 4 was lost to weather, this morning is used to make it up where the timing allows.

Who this trip is not for
- Anyone who finds long staircases hard on the knees: Paradise Cave alone is more than 800 steps.
- Travellers visiting from September to December, when rain on this coast is heaviest and cave visits and roads close at short notice.
- Riders who want to ride the motorbike themselves: our motorbike day is pillion only.
- People who are claustrophobic in tight wet spaces: Dark Cave involves swimming in a dim passage.
- Travellers whose real goal is Son Doong: we do not sell it.
When to go
The nearest WMO climate station with published normals is Ha Tinh, about 150 km north. It records 504 mm of rain in September and 742 mm in October, and October to December is the rainy season for central Vietnam. June and July are dry but hot, with average maximums around 34 to 35 °C, so rides start at 06:30. February to May is the window we recommend. See the when-to-go page for the 12-month chart.

Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Do I need a motorbike licence for day 4?
No. You ride as a passenger behind a local rider. Driving a motorbike yourself in Vietnam requires an international driving permit of the 1968 convention together with your home licence, which is one reason we do not offer self-ride days.
Can I do the 7 km Paradise Cave route instead of the walkway?
It is a separate guided product with an age range of 16 to 65, a minimum of two people and booking at least a day ahead. Tell us when you enquire and we add it as an extra line on the quote.
How cold is it inside the caves?
Cooler than outside, which is welcome from May to August. Bring a dry layer for Paradise Cave and swimwear for Dark Cave.
Is there a way to make this trip easier?
Yes. Take the van through the hilliest section of day 2 and the trip drops to roughly Grade 2. The cave steps stay the same.
