The Mekong Delta, at bicycle speed
Flat land cut by rivers and canals, with narrow concrete lanes that only bikes and scooters use. Hot all year, wet from May to October, and connected to Cambodia by river.
At a glance
What the delta actually is
The Mekong Delta is the flat, crowded, wet south of Vietnam, where the river splits into branches before reaching the sea. It is not wilderness. Almost every metre is farmed, fished or lived on, and the lanes that make it good for cycling exist because people need to reach houses that face the water rather than the road.
For a rider this means a route that never climbs but rarely runs straight: lanes turn with the canals, end at a ferry or a footbridge, and pass a house, an orchard and a school in every kilometre. The van cannot follow, so it leapfrogs to meeting points.
Its weakness is heat. There is no cool season here, only a dry one. Ride from 06:30, stop by late morning, and the delta is easy; ride at noon and it is not.

A riding day in the delta
Rides start at 06:30, when the lanes are already busy with people going to market and school but the heat has not built. The first hour is the coolest and usually the longest stretch without a stop. From mid-morning we stop more often: a coffee under a tree, a small ferry, a bridge high enough to see across the orchards.
By 11:00 or 11:30 the main ride is done. Lunch is long and in the shade, and the afternoon is for a boat, a rest or a short ride after 16:00 if anyone wants one. On the hardest day of our nine-day route that pattern still gets you about 65 km with no hill to speak of.
How many nights
Three nights covers Ben Tre, a river island and Can Tho. A fourth at Chau Doc lets you leave for Cambodia by river instead of returning to Ho Chi Minh City. Fewer than three and the delta becomes a day trip from the city, mostly spent on the highway.

Getting there and moving on
- From Ho Chi Minh City: about two hours by road to Ben Tre, depending on traffic leaving the city.
- Inside the delta: small ferries and bridges; a van carries luggage between overnight stops.
- To Cambodia: a speedboat leaves Chau Doc for Phnom Penh at 07:00. The operator quotes about four hours on the water plus about two hours at the border. Cambodia's e-visa is not accepted at this crossing; buy the visa on arrival.

When to skip the delta
- If heat makes you ill: nothing on this route is cool.
- If you can only travel in October or November and want dry lanes.
- If you want hills or long open views: lanes are enclosed by orchards and houses.
- If you want silence: the delta is one of the most densely farmed parts of the country.

Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Is the delta good for beginner cyclists?
The terrain is, the lanes take practice. Narrow concrete with water either side asks for steady handling. Short morning rides suit beginners well.
Can we see a floating market?
Yes, at Cai Rang near Can Tho. Go at first light, when the wholesale boats are trading and before most visitor boats arrive.
Can I bring my bike across the border?
Yes, on the speedboat at half the adult fare. On our tours the bikes change at the border instead.
Are there mosquitoes?
Yes, especially at dusk near water. Bring repellent and long sleeves for the evenings.
